About the Translucent gene
The Translucent mutation is a recessive trait in the central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) that makes the scales and skin less opaque. A dragon that is homozygous looks noticeably different from a normal dragon from the moment it hatches. The name is often shortened to Trans by keepers.
Appearance
You can tell by the skin and scales. A trans dragon has scales that look a bit gummy or glassy instead of solid, and the side spikes tend to be clear. This effect is strongest on a hatchling. Because a baby's belly skin is thin, the dark lining underneath shows through to give a purple or blue cast. Although some keep a trace of it into adulthood, most animals lose this as the skin thickens with age. Its colour is usually brighter and cleaner than on a normal dragon. Eye colour proves nothing on its own, but solid black eyes are common, especially early on. A genuine homozygous trans can have a normal-looking iris or fully black eyes, and the shade can change as the animal matures.
Genetics
Because Translucent is recessive, a single copy results in a carrier that looks normal instead of a visible trans. An ordinary bearded dragon is the look for Het Translucent, 50% Het Translucent and 66% Het Translucent. This gene does not belong to any allelic complex. When stacked with Hypo, it becomes Hypo Translucent and has its own page. Breeders also put Translucent into Leatherback lines, where it is most often sold as Hypo Translucent Leatherback or HTL.
