About the Zero gene
The Zero is a masking mutation in the central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) that is recessive. It takes away both pattern and colour to leave a silver-grey to white animal with no markings. Like Witblits, it is one of the hobby's patternless genes. It reached the market after Witblits was already established.
Appearance
A Zero has very little colour and no pattern. It is silver-grey to near white, unlike a normal dragon which shows blotching and banding. One of the more consistent signs of the gene is a dark patch above each front leg. This is sometimes called a shoulder pad and it helps to tell a Zero from a plain grey animal that is just not showing much colour that day. A young Zero is not always as clean as the adult it becomes because hatchlings can carry a faint pattern that sheds out as they grow. It moves toward paper white when stacked with Hypo. With Translucent it takes a purple-grey cast, and with both it goes toward a dusty lavender.
Genetics
Because Zero is recessive, a dragon must have two copies to show the trait. One copy makes a carrier look like an ordinary bearded dragon. Het Zero, 50% Het Zero and 66% Het Zero all pass as normal until they are bred. This gene is not part of any allelic complex. It is combined with Hypo, Translucent and Leatherback, and paired with Witblits it makes Wero, which has its own page. Although where it first appeared is disputed, it reached the US hobby through the breeder Phantom Dragons.
