About the Orange gene
Orange is a colour, not a mutation. It is built by picking the warmest animals out of a clutch and pairing them again, generation after generation, so what a buyer is really buying is somebody's breeding record rather than a gene with a name.
Appearance
The range is wide, from a sandy apricot wash to a saturated tangerine carried across the whole animal, and how much of it an individual shows depends on its lineage, its parents' colour and the conditions it is kept in. Orange sits on a continuum with red at one end and yellow or citrus at the other, and MorphMarket files it among the animals showing red mixed with other colours.
None of that colour is fixed hour to hour. Smith and colleagues, working on Pogona vitticeps in 2016, measured the back changing reflectance with temperature while the beard and chest did not respond to temperature at all, being reserved instead for social signalling. A cold or stressed dragon darkens and mutes; a warm settled one lightens and shows what it has. A black beard says nothing about the colour line. Over a life, colour strengthens through the first year or two and then dulls gradually.
That leaves the adult colour of both parents, photographed warm and in natural daylight, as the one cue worth trusting. The hatchling in front of you is confounded by age, basking temperature and the bulb it was shot under, and a photograph taken beneath a red or blue heat lamp is worthless as evidence. Ask what the parents looked like at eighteen months.
Genetics
Polygenic, which is the line drawn through the whole bearded dragon catalogue: Hypo, Translucent, Zero, Witblits, Dunner, Genetic Stripe and Leatherback follow Mendelian rules, while Red, Orange, Yellow or Citrus, White, Brown and Purple are line bred colour. There is no orange gene to test for, no het Orange, and a pairing gives a spread rather than a ratio. Sunburst and Tangerine are alternative names for it, and Tangerine carries its own catalogue row here. Orange is made by pairing animals that already show it, or by crossing red to yellow and pushing the result over generations. The one genuinely inherited trait usually stacked underneath is Hypo, a recessive that strips melanin and lets whatever orange is present read brighter, which is why so many strongly coloured animals are also hypos; its tell is clear nails with no dark melanin stripe.
Known issues
Nothing is documented against orange colour itself. What does follow a tightly line bred colour project is the narrowing gene pool behind it: fixing a look means breeding related animals, and weakened immunity, reduced fertility and smaller clutches are the reported cost of pushing that too far. It is a question to put to the seller about the line, not a property of the colour.
