About the Orange gene
The bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) has a colour line called Orange which is made from many genes at once. This line was created by breeders who paired the most orange animals from one clutch with others from another clutch that were just as orange. They also achieved this by putting yellow and red dragons together and repeating the process over generations until the colour deepened. Apart from true morphs like Translucent and Hypo, Orange sits with Citrus and Red among the colour lines.
Appearance
The dragon has a strong orange body. Because a dragon's colour depends on its environment, the colour of its parents, and its line, two dragons sold under the same name might look quite different. A youngster's colour is only a guide to the adult because colour moves as a dragon matures, becoming brighter on some and duller on others. Genetics
Because Orange is polygenic, it does not follow single-gene rules like Hypo or Leatherback do. Two orange dragons produce young with varying amounts of orange. To keep the line going, breeders pair orange animals, or red with yellow, and hold back the deepest-coloured young. It is often sold as Hypo Orange when combined with Hypo.
