About the Red gene

Red is the deep end of the bearded dragon colour scale and the hardest to hold. Selection builds it, not a gene, so every animal sold as red is one breeder's holdbacks, and depth accumulates over generations rather than in a single pairing.

Appearance

The range runs from fire engine red through brick and ruby down to dull maroon and nearly pink. A good one carries colour nose to tail with little dull brown striping, the body usually a shade darker than the head. Patchy red over an otherwise ordinary base is the signature of weak selection.

Colour moves, and that part is measured. Smith and colleagues found in 2016 that Pogona vitticeps changes its back's reflectance with temperature, pale when hot and dark when cool, while the beard and chest change only for social signalling. A cold, stressed or displaying dragon will not photograph as its true colour. Colour dulls ahead of a shed and returns brighter after it, and chronic cold or poor UVB suppresses what the animal can show.

Age matters more here than on any other colour. Red gains saturation with maturity rather than fading, most sharply between roughly six and twenty four months, so a brick coloured juvenile can finish deep crimson while a vivid hatchling from an undocumented pairing can go nowhere. Trust adult photographs of both parents at eighteen to twenty four months in natural light. Saturation editing of listing photographs is a known problem online, and pet shops apply red, sandfire and fancy to any warm toned animal.

Genetics

Polygenic. MorphMarket files red with the line bred colours, alongside Orange, Yellow or Citrus, White, Brown and Purple, rather than with the Mendelian morphs. There is no red gene to test for, no het Red, and a pairing returns a distribution rather than a ratio. Blood Red and Ruby Red are grouped with Red among the mostly red animals and named among its proven lines. No separate reference entry exists for Blood Red, so it most likely marks intensity within red rather than an independent line, though it carries its own catalogue row here. Ruby Red reads cooler and more jewel toned. Sandfire is a lineage name leaning red orange, from Bob Mailloux's Sandfire Dragon Ranch, founded with Philippe de Vosjoli and selecting for red; Coral, Cowley Belgium Red and the imported Red Monster line also carry real provenance. Hypo is the one genuine mutation in this neighbourhood, a recessive that strips the dark overlay and lets red read cleanly, which is why it sits under so many red animals.

Known issues

Nothing is documented against red colour itself, and a red dragon needs what any other bearded dragon needs. The exposure is in the method: line breeding is a milder form of inbreeding, and keepers blame the health problems in heavily pushed colour projects on narrowed gene pools rather than the colours. Ask what the line is and how it has been outcrossed before buying breeding stock.
