About the Red gene
The red colour line in the central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) is ranked by collectors as one of the most coveted colours. It is not a single-gene mutation. This line was built by breeders who paired their reddest dragons with other heavily red animals. Breeding in this way allows the red to deepen with each generation.
Appearance
Reds range from fire-engine red to dull maroon and even almost pink. This colour covers the tail, body and head, though the body is usually a shade darker than the head. The colour of a hatchling does not settle the adult. As the dragon grows, the colour keeps changing, becoming brighter on some animals and duller on others.
Genetics
Because red is polygenic, there is no super form and no het as there is no single red gene. Red to red breeding does not produce the same quality of red in every hatchling. Proven lines include Sandfire Red, Cowley Belgium Red, Citrus, Blood Red, Ruby and Coral. Red is often stacked on Hypo to make the red read brighter because it strips back dark pigment.
