About the Genetic Stripe gene

Genetic Stripe puts two clean lines down the back, one either side of the spine, running from the neck to the base of the tail and often onto the tail itself. That is the whole of the visual claim, and the discipline is in the word clean.

Appearance

The two lines are organised and longitudinal, starting near the back of the head or the shoulders, and they may carry on visibly onto the tail or weaken and break near the hips. A dragon whose natural dorsal blotches have merged into a broad band is not a genetic stripe, and neither is one with a wandering, broken line. Those animals get sold under names like colour stripe, phantom stripe and visual stripe, which describe how an animal looks and predict nothing about what it produces. Contrast depends on the colour underneath, bold on a red or high yellow animal and subtle on a drab one, and within one clutch expression runs from clean and parallel to functionally absent.

Genetics

Two readings are in circulation and nothing published settles it. Most morph catalogues call Genetic Stripe a dominant mutation, then go on to describe clutches that behave nothing like a dominant gene, with siblings ranging from cleanly striped to animals you would call normal if you did not know the parents. The competing reading is a selectively fixed polygenic pattern, inheriting strongly without inheriting predictably. MorphMarket's own entry holds both: a type field reading dominant, beside text saying the trait behaves like a fixed poly. Treat a seller who is certain either way with the same scepticism.

What the two readings share is the part that changes a purchase. There is no het genetic stripe beside the catalogue's Het Hypo, Het Translucent, Het Zero and Het Witblits, so an unstriped animal out of striped parents cannot be sold as a carrier of anything provable. Ask what the last clutch looked like, and how many of them you would have called striped. Direction is what separates the trait from its neighbours: genetic stripe runs the length of the body, Tiger runs across it, and Dunner reorganises the scales and scatters the pattern several ways at once, so a Genetic Stripe Dunner reads as lines with interference.
