About the Witblits gene
Witblits is a recessive masking gene in the central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). This gene mutes colour to a single earthy tone and strips out pattern. It is one of the few patternless genes that the hobby breeds for today. South Africa is where it was first recorded.
Appearance
Witblits dragons lack any pattern, meaning they have no lateral striping, blotches or spots. A dull tan, brown or grey is the usual single colour for the whole body. For a well-bred animal, that earth tone becomes a brighter sandy orange. This is the look line breeders are after. The colour stays earthy instead of the white of a Zero.
Genetics
Witblits is a recessive trait which means a dragon must have two copies to show it. Whether a dragon is a Het Witblits, 50% Het Witblits or 66% Het Witblits, it looks like an ordinary bearded dragon. It is not part of any allelic complex. Combined with Zero it makes Wero, a dragon homozygous for both genes that is pale and near-white. The first US imports from South Africa were brought by Phantom Dragons.
