About Hypo Translucent
A Hypo Translucent bearded dragon has two separate recessive genes. The Translucent gene thins the skin and removes the reflective white pigment below it so more of what lies underneath shows through. Because Hypo reduces dark pigment across the skin, you are paying for both effects landing on the same animal, not either gene on its own.
Appearance
Clear nails are the most reliable sign for the Hypo side. No digit has the dark line found on an unaffected dragon, and this holds for life whatever the body colour does. The Hypo gene moves the base colour away from grey and brown toward snow white, pale orange, powder blue, yellow, or pink. Because the skin is thin and slightly cloudy instead of opaque, it looks translucent, which is most obvious on the tail sides and the belly. A blue tint is common on the belly of young animals and sometimes above the eyes. This is the tissue of the body showing through the thin skin, and it fades as the skin thickens as they grow. Eye colour varies between animals and cannot prove the gene alone. A Translucent can have solid black eyes or normal ones, with no reliable link to how much the rest of the trait shows. The spikes along the sides tend to be clear rather than fully coloured, and the beard scales can look see-through. How pale an adult stays depends heavily on the line behind it and the individual.
Genetics
Because Hypo and Translucent are at separate loci, an animal needs two copies of each to show both. Each gene has its own carrier names. These are Het Hypo, 50% Het Hypo and 66% Het Hypo on one side, and Het Translucent, 50% Het Translucent and 66% Het Translucent on the other. All of these are carriers, not visuals. Neither gene has a distinct super form because showing the trait simply takes two copies. Sellers call the combination Hypo Trans. This stacks with other bearded dragon genes. Listings show Hypo Trans Leatherback, Hypo Trans Zero and Hypo Trans Witblits. No breeder or year is attached to the first pairing of the two genes.
