About the Hypo Translucent gene
Hypo Translucent is two genes at once rather than a gene of its own: one animal carrying two separate simple recessives, homozygous for each. Every rule that applies to them singly still applies here. The two effects compound, and the colour underneath is neither muted by melanin nor flattened by an opaque skin, which is why the combination reads deeper and wetter than either trait alone.
Appearance
The hypo side gives clear, white or ivory claws, present from hatching. The translucent side gives skin and scales that look glossy or semi-transparent rather than opaque, often with clear side spikes, and a blue, blue grey or lavender underside on hatchlings and juveniles. That colour is the black membrane lining the abdomen showing through the skin, and it ends sharply just above the legs. The belly usually fades as the skin thickens with age, so an adult bought on a hatchling photograph will not look like the hatchling. The eyes are not the test. A visual translucent may have solid black eyes, one black eye, partly darkened eyes with the gold iris still showing, or ordinary ones, and the darkening can come and go over a few days while the animal grows. Neither gene changes scale structure, claw shape or body proportions.
Genetics
Two independent simple recessives, tracked separately rather than as one package, so both parents have to carry both genes, and a dragon sold as het hypo het translucent carries two separate hidden states. Ask which side of the pairing is visual for which gene, and what the last clutch produced.
The genes do not affect each other, but their visible effects overlap while you are identifying an animal. Hypo clears the claws and leaves the iris visible; translucent may darken the eyes and does not touch the claws. Check the claws for one and the juvenile belly for the other. There is no such thing as a partial translucent. An animal with two copies is translucent whatever its eyes are doing on the day you look.
Known issues
You will meet the claim that breeding two translucents together yields weak or short lived offspring. It gets repeated constantly. Breeders who compared their own translucent pairings against their others reject it, and they trace it to an abandoned project pushing for a full body blue tint rather than to the gene itself, which has since spread through the captive population. Nothing published settles it either way.
