About the Nr Mandarin gene
The NR Mandarin is an incomplete dominant gene. It moves a royal python (ball python) toward a deep, burnt orange. Two copies of this gene make the Super NR Mandarin. This colour is not fixed for life. As some animals grow, they fade toward a normal-looking pattern. Other animals keep the colour or it deepens further into adulthood. Since the hobby also sells another gene as plain Mandarin, you tell an authentic NR Mandarin from a lookalike by using a DNA test.
Appearance
A hatchling NR Mandarin has many dark, burnt orange tones throughout its body. These individuals change as they grow. Some may lose a lot of that bright colour and look like a normal royal python with a clean pattern. Other individuals keep it or turn into warmer, richer oranges as adults. The Super NR Mandarin looks much less like a normal than the single-copy form. Its oranges are deeper, the flaming runs up the sides of the alien heads are heavy, the pattern pixelates less, and the pale centres inside the alien heads are smaller.
Genetics
The NR Mandarin is incomplete dominant, meaning one copy produces an NR Mandarin and two copies result in the Super NR Mandarin, which are the only two forms in the family. It has no known related traits and sits in no allelic complex. NR stands for Nuyten Reptiles, the Dutch breeder behind the gene. A DNA test matters because there is another, unrelated gene in the hobby called Mandarin that has no proven super of its own. Only the Nuyten Reptiles line is NR Mandarin, and it is the line this page covers. To deepen colour and saturation instead of changing the pattern, breeders often pair it with Hypo, Pastel and similar genes.
