About the Purple Line gene
The western hognose snake has a colour line called Purple Line. This line makes red stock darker with a purple cast, moving toward maroon and burgundy. To deepen the colour of anaconda, superconda and albino projects, keepers use it.
Appearance
A quality Purple Line looks like a very dark red. It is closer to burgundy or maroon than to the bright red found in an extreme red, and it has purple running through the colour. This line came from extreme red breeding where the darkest red animals were paired together, meaning it sits at the deep end of that red. Because expression varies, the purple might be obvious on some animals or faint on others. You should judge the animal by its photographs rather than the name on the listing. When crossed into an albino, the line produces a more saturated, redder colour than a standard albino shows.
Genetics
The Purple Line is line bred and polygenic. Because there is no single gene behind it, the line does not follow simple Mendelian inheritance. You cannot calculate a pairing for it in the same way you can for an incomplete dominant or recessive gene. You will find it listed as Purple Line and as Pos Purple Line. It is worked into other genes and sold under names like Purple Line Superconda, Purple Line Anaconda and Purple Line Albino. The line first appeared in the early Extreme Red breedings from Justin Mitcham of Extreme Hogs.
