Arctic Hognoses

Arctic is one of the western hognose snake's most useful modifier genes, valued less for a single fixed look than for what it does inside a combo. A single copy strips warmth out of the base colour and sharpens the pattern, giving a keeper a hognose that reads noticeably cleaner and higher-contrast than a normal from across the room. That utility, as much as the solo animal, is why breeders reach for Arctic when building toward the whiter, blacker combos the market wants.

Appearance

A single copy lightens the base colour toward pale grey, silver or tan and pulls saturation out of the pattern, leaving crisper, more clearly defined blotches than a normal hognose shows. Dark or light borders trace the dorsal blotches. Most Arctics carry a matching eyebrow mark above each eye, and fine flecking or speckling often shows through the lightened background. The overall effect reads as a cleaner, higher-contrast hognose rather than a different pattern.

Super Arctic, the two-copy form, pushes the same changes further rather than adding anything new. Hatchlings often start close to black and lighten with each shed into the form's signature look: a pale to near-white base with dark, sharply bordered blotches and strong black-and-white contrast. Where a single-copy Arctic reads as a brighter, cleaner hognose, Super Arctic reads as a genuinely different-looking animal, which is why it anchors most of the high-contrast combo projects built around this gene.

Genetics

Arctic is an incomplete dominant gene: one copy produces the Arctic phenotype and two copies produce Super Arctic, with no separate invisible het to track since a single-copy animal already shows the trait. The catalogue's only two family members are Arctic and Super Arctic. Breeders commonly stack Arctic into other hognose lines specifically to sharpen contrast, which is why it turns up as a supporting gene in high-contrast combo projects as often as it appears on its own.
