About the Arctic gene
Arctic works on contrast and colour. It makes the pattern have a crisp edge, tones down warm colours, and lightens the ground. This morph turns up in many high-contrast and greyscale combinations of the western hognose. Two copies make the Super Arctic, a very different animal from the single form.
Appearance
A single-copy Arctic is mostly shades of grey with some brown showing through. These markings have a dark outline and often feature a clean white rim on the outside. The head stamp is cleaner than a normal's, with speckling around it. Look at the vent for a pinkish-orange scale. You will see different expressions because some animals are soft grey while others have a creamy ground and near-black pattern of high contrast. Until the first proper shed clears the colour, hatchlings can look muddy.
A Super Arctic hatches almost solid black. Over several sheds it lightens into a black-and-grey or near black-and-white snake with black eyes and frosted saddles. Instead of being cleaned up, its head stamp is broken up and splattered, which is the opposite way to the single form's.
Genetics
Arctic is an incomplete dominant gene. It is often called co-dom by many breeders, but this just describes the same thing. The family is Arctic and the two-copy Super Arctic. It is also sold as JMG Axanthic, but it is not the same as the recessive Axanthic gene. Because Antarctic sits at the same locus, pairing it to Arctic can produce an Antarctic Arctic with one copy of each.
Combinations with names include Grey Fog (Arctic Anaconda), Platinum (Arctic Superconda), Moondust (Arctic Lavender), Moonstone (Super Arctic Lavender), Mochaccino (Arctic Mocha) and AAA, or Triple A (Albino Arctic Anaconda). These multi-gene animals are listed under the genes that make them up.
The gene was recognised as its own as soon as the first Super Arctic hatched. It came out of the line-bred Lemon Ghost project from JMG Reptile in the 2000s.
