Monsoon Royal Pythons for sale in the UK

A royal python's pattern is broken by Monsoon. The head stays plain and pale while a thin broken dorsal stripe runs down the back and the alien heads shatter into a busy labyrinth. The hobby treats the two as one gene, and the Moray line looks the same even though it was found separately.

Monsoon is also sold as Monson. Royal pythons are also known as ball pythons - UK keepers use both names.

About the Monsoon gene

Updated 6 sources

The Monsoon is a pattern gene. When a royal python (ball python) has two copies, the ordered alien-head blotches of a normal are replaced by a broken, crowded pattern. The head stays mostly alone. This gene moves pigment around without changing the colour. It layers over colour genes including Calico, Pastel and Mojave.

Appearance

A light tan head with very little head stamp, if any, makes the head the exception. The alien heads shatter into a pattern like a labyrinth that covers the body and continues down the tail. A thin dorsal stripe runs along the spine and is broken in places. This stripe is separated from the pattern around it. A Monsoon looks like a busy, scrambled body behind a plain, pale head.

Genetics

The Monsoon gene is recessive. It is traded as a recessive, even though a minority of breeders argue it acts like an incomplete dominant because hets show subtle pattern markers. For a holdback test, ProHerper offers a shed test for it which is about 99 per cent accurate. Carriers are sold as Het Monsoon, 50% Het Monsoon, 66% Het Monsoon and Pos Het Monsoon.

IRES Reptiles hatched Moray in 2017 from stock with no link to Dave Green's collection. This is its one known partner. Although it has not been confirmed at the DNA level, the hobby treats them as one gene. The two look the same and breeders have produced animals carrying both.

Dave Green proved the gene recessive in 2015. He produced the first one in 2013, which was a Mojave Monsoon from a pairing aimed at Crystals. Combo names include Mojave Monsoon, Monsoon Special, Mojave Monsoon Special, Calico Mojave Monsoon and Monsoon Phantom.
