Mahogany Royal Pythons
A royal python with the Mahogany morph has a head that is nearly black and chained alien heads against gold and earthy browns. You should check if an animal has one copy or two before buying because the two-copy form is sold under the name Suma.
About the Mahogany gene
In a royal python (ball python), the Mahogany morph alters both the pattern and the colour. Because earthy browns and gold are set against dark brown and near-black markings, the entire animal looks darker than a normal. This morph appears in a long list of designer combos.
Appearance
The head is very dark, ranging from almost black to chocolate brown, and it usually becomes lighter towards the neck and back of the head. Faded are the eye stripes. A chain of alien heads covers most of the snake along the body, where their edges may look pixelated instead of clean. Heavy flaming climbs the flanks, and dark blushing follows the black puzzle pattern. A stripe of earthy-gold runs down the spine while the tail keeps the same chained pattern. How dark it is overall and the contrast between the warm ground colour and the black markings is what separates a Mahogany from a normal at a glance.
Genetics
The Mahogany gene is incomplete dominant, which the hobby often groups with "co-dom". A single copy shows, while the two-copy form is Super Mahogany, also known as Suma. Cinder is the allelic partner within the Mahogany complex, which takes its name from this gene. Amber Pastel (Mahogany with Citrus Pastel), Firogany (Fire Mahogany), Black Potion (Mahogany Mojave), Black Sabbath (Mahogany Mystic), and Abacus (Enchi Mahogany) are named combos built on it. The gene was proved out by Amir Soleymani in 2005.
