About the Lavender Albino gene

Where a normal royal python carries black or dark brown, a Lavender Albino carries lavender. This is a colour mutation: a normal's pattern stays largely untouched, and the pigment is what changes. The yellow that remains runs brighter than on a common albino. Set beside a standard Albino, which is white where the dark pigment would sit, the two are easy to tell apart.

Hatchlings do not arrive finished: as the animal grows, the background shifts from white towards a translucent pale lavender pink and the yellow markings brighten.

Lavender Albino and Albino are two separate genes rather than two versions of one. An animal can carry both genes without showing either.

Lavender Albino is recessive, and anything other than a visual looks like a normal royal python: the catalogue carries Het Lavender Albino, 50% Het Lavender Albino, 66% Het Lavender Albino and Pos Het Lavender Albino alongside the visual row. Lav and Lav Albino are the same gene under shorter names.

Ralph Davis Reptiles first produced the gene in 2001.
