About the Hypo gene

Hypo takes dark pigment out rather than adding colour. Less black leaves a paler animal whose scaling gives it the look of a snake permanently mid-shed. The sheds themselves come off clear and patternless, which is where the name came from. A Hypo becomes more attractive as it matures.

Hypo is recessive, so Het Hypo, 50% Het Hypo, 66% Het Hypo and Pos Het Hypo all look like a normal ball python.

Ghost is a second name for the same gene, and Hyp turns up as a short form. Listings here are tagged Hypo, so that is the row to search whichever name a seller uses. The catalogue's other Ghost rows, Ghost (Vesper), Green Ghost, Orange Ghost, Silver Ghost, Super Silver Ghost and Desert Ghost, are their own genes and not this one.

Hypo shows up in a long list of traded combinations: Buttery Nipple, Candied Clown, Caramel Glow, Ghost Killa, Ghostbuster, Honey Bee, Humble Bee, Mimosa, Mojito, Orange Burst, Silver Surfer, SK True Ghost, Sunglow, Super Glow, Swarm and True Ghost.

Kevin McCurley and New England Reptile Distributors first produced it in 1994.
