About the Clown gene
Clown rebuilds a ball python's pattern from head to tail, without carrying the wobble gene.
A wide, irregular dorsal stripe runs the length of the body, with blotchy side markings that vary from animal to animal, so photographs of the individual animal matter more than the morph name. The head carries teardrop-shaped, mottled markings of its own. The rest of the animal comes out lighter and more yellow-toned than a normal ball python, in a caramel-brown and yellow scheme.
Clown was proved out by Dave and Tracy Barker of Vida Preciosa International (VPI). The origin year is disputed: 1999 and 1996 are both recorded. The gene anchors the Clown complex and is allelic with Cryptic.
Clown is recessive, so anything other than a visual looks like a normal ball python. Alongside visual Clown, listings carry Het Clown, 50% Het Clown, 66% Het Clown and Pos Het Clown. For any het label, ask the seller what evidence sits behind it.
Combo names built on Clown include Pastel Clown, Banana Clown, Pied Clown and Albino Clown.
