About the Bongo gene
The royal python (ball python) has a pattern gene called Bongo. This gene darkens the back and scrambles the body pattern. While the markings stay clean instead of smudged, the dorsal stripe is often wiped out.
Appearance
A Bongo has a bright tan head instead of the dark head seen on a normal. It usually shows a pinhole mark in the headstamp at the rear of the crown. The body pattern is shaken up heavily. These markings look melted yet stay clean. There are fewer smudges and spots than a normal shows, and the dorsal stripe is often missing. The back tends towards black, while the overall colour runs slightly darker. The alien heads on the flanks are reduced. A broken pattern is carried by the tail as is the case for the rest of the body.
Genetics
Bongo is an incomplete dominant gene which most keepers still call "co-dom". One copy shows the trait and there is no het to hold it back. Super Bongo is the name for the two-copy form. Although Bongo is suspected to belong to the Spider complex, which includes Hidden Gene Woma, Champagne and Spider, breeding trials have not proven it allelic with them. EB Noah produced the first in 2012. Named combos are Bongo Clown and Pastel Bongo.
