Blade Royal Pythons

The Blade morph changes a royal python's pattern by making the crown have a bright blush while the alien heads on the flanks become large, misshapen, and blank. You can tell a Blade from a normal easily, and when it is paired with Clown, it creates the Blade Clown you will meet in listings.

Royal pythons are also known as ball pythons - UK keepers use both names.

About the Blade gene

Updated 5 sources

The Blade is a pattern gene for the royal python (ball python). Because it reshapes what remains and cuts the pattern back, a Blade is not hard to pick out from a normal.

Appearance

The pattern is much less overall than on a normal. Along the flanks, the alien heads are misshapen, large, and blank. A different cue is the head, where deep blacks sit against bright blushing across the crown.

Genetics

The hobby still loosely files Blade under "co-dom" even though it is incomplete dominant. Because one copy shows, you will find no het Blade to hunt for. Two copies give Super Blade. You will often meet the combination of Blade Clown in listings, sometimes with more genes stacked on top like in Pastel Blade Clown. The first Blade was produced in 2002 by Markus Jayne Ball Pythons.
