Eclipse Leopard Geckos
Because the pupil and iris become indistinguishable, the Eclipse morph fills the eye with solid colour, which is black on a normal and red on an albino. Check the parents behind the label since the eye can change as a hatchling grows and some Blizzards and Super Snows show similar eyes without the gene.
About the Eclipse gene
The eye gene known as Eclipse fills the eye with pigment so that the iris and pupil merge into one solid colour. This gene is one of the ones behind the designer albinos in the hobby. It works just as well on a plain normal. This is how you get a wild-type gecko with a fully black-eyed look.
Appearance
An albino has a red eye while a normal-coloured animal has one that is solid black. Not every Eclipse shows the full effect. Some have the colour over only part of the eye, whether front or back, and these are sold as snake-eyed. Often a percentage is given for how much of the eye is covered. Other animals have eyes that look close to normal. The eye can also change with age. A hatchling that starts fully solid may grow into a normal-looking or snake-eyed adult. This means a photograph of a baby is no promise of the adult.
White can reach further up the body on some lines, but many Eclipses carry white on the tail, the feet and the nose. Speckling along the tail and body is common. A patternless stripe turns up in Eclipse lines more often than chance would suggest, though it can be bred away from.
A solid eye is not proof on its own, though. Blizzards can show a snake-eyed look without the gene, and Super Snows have solid black eyes without the gene. On those animals, the pedigree tells you more than the eye does.
Genetics
The Eclipse is a recessive trait. A Het Eclipse looks like any other leopard gecko of its morph and has ordinary eyes. You might see it listed as Eclipse, Het Eclipse, 50% Het Eclipse, 66% Het Eclipse or Pos Het Eclipse. Ron Tremper's Tremper albino work first featured it in 2004.
People often mistake Eclipse for RAPTOR because that is how it first reached the hobby. It is a separate gene and only one part of that combo. When paired with each albino strain it gives RAPTOR (Tremper albino), RADAR (Bell albino) and Typhoon (Rainwater albino). A Super Snow Eclipse is also called Total Eclipse or Galaxy. Diablo Blanco combines Tremper albino, Blizzard and Eclipse. A line selected for blue on the head is Blue Spot Eclipse.
