Blood Leopard Geckos
Blood is a tangerine leopard gecko line bred for a deep orange body that tips toward red and has far less orange on the head. Because a gecko that is intensely orange is not a Blood on looks alone, you should ask for lineage that goes back to JMG stock.
About the Blood gene
JMG Reptile bred the Blood line of tangerine leopard geckos to have a deep orange body that leans toward red. Since this is a line rather than a single gene, the lineage behind an animal is just as important as the colour in its photographs.
Appearance
The body of a good Blood is a deep orange with a hint of red. The head has less orange by comparison, so the colour is set against a quieter head. JMG aimed for a nearly red hypo tangerine. These animals are sold as Blood Hypo and Blood Tangerine as well as plain Blood. One shade alone does not make one because a very orange super hypo tangerine from another line can look the same in a photograph.
Genetics
Because Blood is a tangerine bloodline held together by line breeding, it is polygenic and has no super form and no het. The name belongs to the lineage rather than the look, as these are hypo tangerines genetically. A gecko is a Blood only when its ancestors and parents come from the line, so ask the seller for the lineage back to JMG stock. JMG bred the line into its Bell and Tremper albinos, and Blood stock turns up in Tangelo projects and Bell projects elsewhere. Other named lines built from it are Black Blood and Purple Blood, the Sin City Gecko line, and Blood Emerine. This last one aims to add Blood's deep tangerine while keeping emerine's green tones. JMG Reptile, the father-and-son business of Jeff Galewood Sr. and Jr., started the line in 2002. It is listed as Blood and Pos Blood.
