Blizzard Leopard Geckos
A Blizzard hatches with no pattern and stays that way, one even colour anywhere from near white through yellow to dusky purple. Midnight is only a colour name and solid dark eyes can turn up without Eclipse, so buy on the animal and its pairing rather than the label.
About the Blizzard gene
The Blizzard morph removes every band and spot from a leopard gecko to leave one even colour from the nose to the tail tip. Because it provides a clean, pale base for many of the whitest combos in the hobby, it appears in so many albino and Eclipse projects.
Appearance
A Blizzard is born without a pattern and remains patternless as an adult, with a plain belly and tail just like the back. The body colour can range from grey and yellow to almost white and dusky purple, and most animals have some pale yellow. Because incubation temperature changes the shade, clutch mates may look different. Hatchlings often have a darker head that becomes even as they grow. These darker animals are sold as Midnight Blizzards, but no genetic difference separates them from other Blizzards as the name only describes their colour.
The eyes are usually black to blue-black. Some Blizzards show dark eyes that are solid or partly solid with no Eclipse in them, so a Blizzard with black eyes proves nothing about Eclipse on its own. To tell a Blizzard from a Murphy Patternless, which is the other patternless gene, look at the hatchling. A Murphy hatches with spots that fade as it grows, while a Blizzard is plain from the egg.
Genetics
The Blizzard is a recessive gene. Animals that are Het Blizzard, 50% Het Blizzard, 66% Het Blizzard and Pos Het Blizzard all look like normal leopard geckos. This is a separate gene from Murphy Patternless and the two do not stand in for each other. If a Blizzard is bred to a Murphy Patternless, the young will look normal but carry both. A Banana Blizzard is the visual for both, though that name is also used loosely for any yellow Blizzard. A Blazing Blizzard is a Blizzard with an albino gene, which is Tremper by default, and Bell and Rainwater versions are sold under the same name. Diablo Blanco is built on Tremper albino, Blizzard and Eclipse. The same recipe on Bell albino is White Knight. BZ is the usual shorthand. The first Blizzards were produced by Prehistoric Pets in 1995.
