Swiss Chocolate Hognoses

Swiss Chocolate darkens a western hognose to a rich chocolate brown, with the heaviest colour on the head. It closely resembles Sable, and the difference to look for is a slightly darker, warmer tone.

About the Swiss Chocolate gene

Swiss Chocolate is a melanistic gene in the western hognose snake (Heterodon nasicus) that turns the animal a very dark chocolate brown.

Appearance

Swiss Chocolate hognoses run from a rich russet brown to nearly black, with the head pattern reduced and darkened. The dark head is the constant; body colour varies from one animal to the next. The look is close to Sable, but Swiss Chocolate is a little darker and leans warmer in tone.

Genetics

Swiss Chocolate is recessive, so a Het Swiss Chocolate, 50% Het Swiss Chocolate, 66% Het Swiss Chocolate or Pos Het Swiss Chocolate looks like a normal western hognose. Swiss Chocolate on an albino is called Tangerine. Jules Toth of Black Hogs in Switzerland produced the gene.
