About the Pos Purple Line gene
A western hognose from Purple Line stock is labelled as Pos Purple Line if it is sold as possibly carrying the line instead of as a Purple Line animal. Because Purple Line is a line-bred colour and a darker development of the extreme red hognose, this label means you are paying for the lineage.
Appearance
A Purple Line hognose of good quality shows a deep red that leans toward maroon and burgundy with purple throughout the colour. Because the colour is line bred, the depth varies between animals and some only show the purple faintly. This line gives a redder, richer animal than a standard albino when bred into albino. A Pos Purple Line might show all of this or a paler version or none of it, so judge the animal on its own photographs instead of the name.
Genetics
Because Purple Line is polygenic, no single gene is behind it and it is built by selective breeding. You cannot predict the result of a pairing. This is the reason why an uncertain animal is tagged Pos rather than het and why there is no Het Purple Line. You will find two names on the site, Purple Line and Pos Purple Line. These animals are widely combined with albino and the anaconda gene. They are sold as Purple Line Albino, Purple Line Superconda and Purple Line Anaconda. Ask the seller which Purple Line animals the parents came from because that lineage is the whole of what the label promises.
