Lemon Ghost Hognoses

The Lemon Ghost is a western hognose. Its colour is the result of selective line breeding over decades rather than a single gene. When you buy one, you are paying for the strength of the yellow on that individual snake and the bloodline that produced it instead of a tested genotype.

Appearance

A Lemon Ghost hatches close to a normal-coloured hognose and becomes more yellow with each shed as it grows. This means the strongest colour only appears when the animal is an adult. As the yellow comes in, the contrast between the saddle markings and the background fades, and the pattern softens into the hazy look breeders call the ghost effect. A normal hognose has a heavily blotched black belly, but the belly pattern is reduced here, running toward orange or yellow. How far any of this goes varies a great deal between individual animals. Because breeders grade their stock in percentages, a snake sold as a lower-percentage Lemon Ghost might look only faintly different from a normal, while a strong, line-bred animal is a clean, saturated yellow.

Genetics

The Lemon Ghost is polygenic and line-bred. There is no single recessive, dominant or incomplete-dominant gene behind it. When you pair two yellow-leaning hognose, you tend to get more yellow-leaning offspring, but these are not in the fixed ratios that a single-gene pairing gives. Jeff Galewood Jr. of JMG Reptile developed the line from the early 2000s. He built it up over roughly two decades of outcrossing and selective breeding to keep it consistent. An animal with only a partial, unconfirmed share of the line is called a Pos Lemon Ghost. Because it is polygenic, Lemon Ghost appears in the hobby in named designer combinations instead of on its own. Lemon Ghost Woma, which crosses it into the banded Woma line, is among the most sought after and best known of those.
