About the Red gene
For crested geckos, Red is a colour. It is one of the three base colours the hobby recognises, along with yellow and black. This colour is bought by keepers on its own and as the base for red-patterned combos like Red Phantom.
Appearance
Some individuals are a lighter brick red while others are a very dark, almost black red. Within that range, the intensity and shade vary from gecko to gecko.
Genetics
Morphpedia lists Red Base on its own page as a separate recessive trait. The plain Red here is the colour you can see on a listing and not a confirmed genotype. To build combo names, Red pairs with pattern traits. Because it is part of the species' natural wild-type variation rather than a bred-in mutation, no first-produced year or originator is on record.
