Orange Patterning Crested Geckos for sale in the UK

Orange Patterning turns a crested gecko's markings orange instead of cream, anywhere from yellowish to deep reddish orange, so judge the pattern rather than the base colour. Orange pattern has long tended to fade with age, so look at the parents as adults.

Orange Patterning is also sold as OP, Orange Pattern.

About the Orange Patterning gene

Updated 5 sources

The base colour of a crested gecko remains unchanged by Orange Patterning, which only alters the pattern colour. Keepers buy this morph for the orange markings that appear where most animals have cream on flames, harlequins, or pinstripes. It is the lines that stay until adulthood that are worth paying for.

Appearance

Crested gecko pattern colour comes in two forms: white and orange. White can range from cream to paper white, but cream is the most common. Orange goes from yellowish orange to tangerine and deep reddish orange, with light orange being the shade you see most often. Orange shows in the contrasting markings on the head and dorsum, so judge the markings rather than the ground colour. An animal can show both pattern colours at once, and Whiteout or White Wall add further white pattern on top. Fading is the main problem with this trait. Because orange has had a long history of washing out as the gecko ages, and only a few lines keep a vibrant orange through adulthood, adult parents tell you more than a bright hatchling does.

Genetics

There is a dispute over how Orange Patterning is inherited. One view says it is dominant while another says it is polygenic. Within a generation or two, selection can move pattern colour toward orange or toward white. Because Orange and white pattern are not allelic, they can be pushed together or separately in varying expressions of each. This trait is often shortened to OP. Listings include both Orange Patterning and Super Orange Patterning. The way a super differs by eye is not set out, so ask the seller what that label rests on. On a Pinstripe, the colour is pushed down below the pins, and some extreme animals show a reverse pin look. OP Phantom tends toward a more patternless animal that is browner, with chocolate tones in some dark Phantoms. Strong Tiger breaks the dorsal pattern into shapes, including chevron backs. No first year or originator is recorded.
