Orange Crested Geckos
An Orange crested gecko has a clear orange ground colour. This is bred up from yellow and is brighter than a typical Tangerine. Judge the base instead of the markings. This is because an orange pattern on a gecko of another base colour is a different trait.
About the Orange gene
Orange is a base colour: a crested gecko whose ground colour has been bred from yellow toward a clear orange. Because it is the base for other traits, keepers buy it for the colour. This usually leads to a longer name, like Orange Phantom, Orange Brindle or Orange Base Paper White.
Appearance
The whole animal has a ground colour of orange, which ranges from a light orange to a darker, deeper tone. This sits on the warm end of the yellow bases. Sellers who sort by base colour often group orange, cream and yellow together. While orange is close in colour to Tangerine, it has been line bred further for tones that are brighter. You must judge the base. If a gecko of another base colour has orange markings, this is Orange Patterning, which is a separate pattern trait and does not make the animal an Orange. The name Creamsicle was first given to an orange base with a cream to white pattern, but that label is now applied much more loosely to include animals with a yellow base.
Genetics
Orange is polygenic. Through selecting brighter animals over generations, this colour is held. Line breeding alone or Tangerine worked into a yellow base can produce the orange. It is also called Orange Base, and you will see it listed as Orange and as Pos Orange. The Candie line and Dreamsicle are named lines. No originator or first year is recorded.
