Dark Crested Geckos
Dark is the darkest of the crested gecko's three base colours, running from light tan through to near black. The shade shifts with firing, so judge an animal from more than one photo before you buy.
About the Dark gene
Dark is the darkest of the crested gecko's three primary base colours; the other two are red and yellow. Keepers buy it for the muted, cool end of the range, either on its own or as the ground under a pattern morph.
Appearance
A dark base runs from light tan or brown to near black. The same animal looks darker and richer fired up and paler fired down, so one photograph cannot settle how dark it really is. Brown often holds on longest in the headstamp, and breeding it out of a dark line can take several generations of selection.
Genetics
Listings use two names, Dark and Pos Dark. Black and Black Base are listed separately, but all three describe much of the same dark end of the colour range.
