Strawberry Corn Snakes
A Strawberry corn snake looks like a hypo that has the brown pulled out and the reds left bright. This makes it read sharper and higher in contrast. Because plenty of snakes sold as hypo over the years were Strawberry, you should check the label on an older hypo line before you pair it.
About the Strawberry gene
The Strawberry corn snake gene reduces the amount of brown in a pattern to make the oranges and reds stand out in sharper contrast. For decades, it was sold as a hypo and it looks like one at a glance. Some of the hobby's pinkish lines might have this gene behind them. Large numbers of Strawberry animals are kept in lines labelled hypo.
Appearance
A Strawberry looks like a hypo but with more contrast. Because the brown is reduced across the body, shades of orange and red sit side by side. These reds do not look dulled like they can in a hypo. In fact, they may look brighter. A snake with one Hypo and one Strawberry allele looks like an intermediate between the two pure forms. This snake is sold as Hypo Strawberry, Hypoberry or Hypo Berry.
Genetics
Strawberry is a recessive trait. A snake that is a Het Strawberry, 50% Het Strawberry, 66% Het Strawberry or Pos Het Strawberry looks just like a normal corn snake. Because Strawberry, Hypo and Christmas are alleles at one locus, they belong to the Hypo complex. This is why a Hypo Strawberry has a look of its own rather than passing as a normal. When a snake has one Christmas and one Strawberry allele, it is sold as Christmas Strawberry. This gene also appears in snow lines. Some lines sold as Coral Snow have been proven to be Strawberry Snows.
