Hypo Chameleons
A hypo veiled chameleon carries less dark pigment than a normal and trades alongside the pale-patched translucents, often under the same name. The labels are used loosely, so judge the animal and its parents rather than the name on the listing.
About the Hypo gene
The trade name Hypo refers to a veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus) with less melanin than a normal animal. These are sold and bred together with translucent veileds, and the two names are often attached to the same animals.
Appearance
A hypomelanistic veiled still has melanin, just less of it, so its dark tones are weaker than a normal's. In the translucent lines it is sold beside, patches of white, pink and black show through the normal colouring.
Genetics
Hypo is sold as a single form, without a Super Hypo or Het Hypo. Translucent and Het Translucent trade under their own names, and translucents are also sold as pied. Whether Hypo and Translucent are one gene or two is not settled, and the trade uses the names interchangeably. Ask the seller what the parents look like and which name they were bought under.
