Hog Island Boa Constrictors
Native to a few small islands off Honduras, Hog Island boas are the dwarf, pale-pink locality form of the common boa. They remain famously calm into adulthood and stay noticeably smaller than a boa from the mainland.
About the Hog Island gene
Hog Island is a location rather than a gene. These small, hypomelanistic common boas are native to the Cayos Cochinos, which are a handful of tiny islands off the north coast of Honduras. A truly small adult with a famously calm temperament is why keepers buy them.
Appearance
Unlike a mainland boa constrictor, a Hog Island boa is naturally hypomelanistic and has much less black pigment. It shows pale, warm tones like pink, tan, cream, and orange or a genuine lemon-yellow on brighter animals rather than the usual dark saddle blotches. These boas stay small as adults. Females typically run four to six feet while males are smaller again, well under the seven to ten feet a mainland Central American boa reaches.
Genetics
Hog Island is a locality instead of a single-gene mutation, so it does not have a het, a super, or a dosage effect. You will see Hog Island and Pos Hog Island in listings. Taxonomists class it as an island form of the common boa. The wild population on the Cayos Cochinos collapsed due to heavy collecting throughout the 1980s but then recovered in what is now a protected reserve. Beyond its own naturally pale colouring, the pure locality has no hypomelanistic gene. Trade sales of the paler Hypo Hog and Sunset lines come from crossing Hog Island stock with an unrelated mainland boa that is separately hypomelanistic. The hobby has a live concern regarding purity because crossbred animals are regularly sold under the Hog Island name. The name is also sometimes wrongly applied to Boa sigma, which is an unrelated species from Mexico's Islas Marías with no connection to Honduras.
