Tangerine names the warm end of the orange band, the shade leaning towards red rather than lemon. It is a judgement about colour rather than a gene, and breeders draw the line differently, so the word tells a buyer where to look and not much more.

Appearance

Tangerine sits between citrus, which leans yellow, and true red. The boundaries are soft. Animals sold as tangerine run from predominantly orange with yellow touches to mostly yellow with orange highlights, sometimes with pink and lime green casts along the back, which is a fair picture of how loose the label is in trade.

The colour is a body and dorsal trait. The beard, chin, throat and upper chest are a signalling system that darkens and lightens on its own, so a black beard says nothing about the colour line; dark ovals on the belly and inner legs are stress marks, not pattern. Hatchlings and juveniles are duller, greyer and more heavily patterned; warmth builds over the first one to two years and peaks somewhere around twelve to eighteen months as the juvenile pattern softens. Within a day the same animal brightens when basking and mutes when cold or stressed, and a drop in basking temperature can dull a vivid orange towards beige inside weeks.

There is no diagnostic marker for tangerine: it is a shade, not a mutation. Judge the animal warm and settled in neutral daylight, never under a coloured heat bulb. If the seller claims a hypo tangerine, check the nails: on a hypo they are clear, with no dark melanin stripe. That is the only binary test in this cluster, and it verifies the hypo, not the tangerine.

Genetics

Polygenic. MorphMarket has no standalone tangerine entry: it files the name under Orange, a line bred colour it lists apart from the Mendelian morphs. There is no tangerine gene to test for and nothing to be het for, and how much orange an animal carries comes down to lineage, its parents' colour and how it is kept, so a tangerine to tangerine pairing returns a spread rather than a ratio. Tangerine carries its own catalogue row here, and at least one established breeder sells a named tangerine phase, but the name carries no defining standard, so its meaning depends on the breeder using it. Hypo is the Mendelian trait usually underneath a good one, a recessive that removes dark pigment and lets the warm tones read brighter and cleaner.

Known issues

Nothing is documented against tangerine colour itself, and care is identical to any other central bearded dragon. The welfare problems in this species attach to structural morphs, Silkback above all, rather than to colour. What does reach a colour line is inbreeding: fixing a line means breeding related animals, and weakened immunity, reduced fertility, smaller clutches and congenital defects are the reported cost in heavily inbred stock, the rarest lines usually being the most inbred. Ask about the lineage rather than the label.
