Tangerine Bearded Dragons
Because the amount of orange depends on the line it comes from, you should buy based on the animal and its parents instead of the name. No two Tangerine bearded dragons have the same mix, though they are orange with yellow running through them.
About the Tangerine gene
Tangerine is a colour line within the bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps). To build it, breeders paired the most orange animals from one clutch with dragons of a similar colour from another clutch. They repeated this process over many generations. Both Tangerine and Sunburst are trade names used for orange line-bred dragons. Keepers buy Tangerine for that warm orange.
Appearance
The balance of yellow and orange in a Tangerine shifts from one dragon to another. Because of its environment, its parents' colour, and its line, the amount of orange an animal shows varies. This means two dragons sold as Tangerine can look quite different side by side. Regardless of what the label says, judge the parents behind it and the animal in front of you. On a hypo animal, the orange reads cleaner and brighter due to less dark pigment in the skin.
Genetics
Tangerine is polygenic. Rather than one mutation, many genes act together to create the colour. It does not follow Mendelian rules like Translucent or Hypo do. Selection over many generations deepens it, but a clutch from well coloured parents still varies. It belongs with other line-bred colours in bearded dragons, including Citrus and Red, each with its own page. Tangerine lines are often built on Hypo.
