About the Paradox gene
Paradox is a description of an animal, not a gene it carries. The word covers irregular patches of colour that contradict what the dragon's known genetics predict, and nothing about it is inherited, so a paradox animal is a one off rather than the start of a line.
Appearance
The markings are scattered with no symmetry and no relationship to the normal dorsal bands, tail rings, tiger barring or genetic stripe, as though paint had been flicked at the animal and left patches wherever it landed. Expression runs from a smudge that is easy to miss to a head split down the centre, the two eyes different colours. Patches can be blue, purple, lavender, black, grey, red, orange, white or cream. Blue and purple are what the look is famous for, but most paradox dragons are neither, and Purple Paradox is a sales flourish rather than a category.
Timing identifies it, and so does persistence. A bearded dragon does not hatch paradox. It hatches ordinary, the shifts develop over the first months, and then keep moving: patches intensify, spread, or fade out entirely, and one apparently purple juvenile matured to plain orange. A real paradox patch survives a complete shed and is still there afterwards. That also separates paradox from the deliberately reproducible spotted lines, which are born with their markings and never gain or lose them.
Because paradox is defined by discolouration nobody can explain, it is the perfect label to hide a burn, a bruise, a scar, an infection, retained shed or staining behind. Ask for photographs before and after a full shed cycle.
Genetics
There is no dominant, recessive or incomplete dominant model here, no het Paradox, and no pairing that guarantees one, including paradox to paradox. Where a mechanism is offered it is somatic rather than inherited: mosaicism, where one embryo's cell lines diverge after fertilisation, or chimerism, where two fertilised ova fuse into a single animal. A cleanly split, left against right animal is argued to be a simple mosaic, since the first cell division sets the two halves. A DNA test can return different answers from different parts of the same dragon. Breeders do report paradox clustering in particular lines, most often those carrying Translucent, and more recently in heavily barred tiger lines, but that behaves as a predisposition rather than an outcome and no proven lines are recorded. Underlying morphs are untouched: a Hypo Trans Paradox is still worked out as Hypo and Trans, with the paradox laid on top and counting for nothing in the calculation.
Known issues
Nothing is documented as caused by paradox, and the claim that every paradox dragon is unhealthy is unsupported. The exposure sits in how it has been hunted. Translucent to translucent pairings, which much of the hobby now avoids, have been used deliberately in the search for paradox animals, so ask about it when a seller describes how a paradox was produced.
